JEWS IN DOLNY KUBIN
First references about Jews in Dolný Kubín are from year 1720. A majority of them moved here from Moravian village Holešov (Czech Republic). They established the religious community in year 1770.
In the bill from year 1735 there are mentioned three Jewish families, which in the year 1775 built the first synagogue. This had 70 seats for men and the same amount of seats for women. At the same time there was built a Mikveh (bath used for the purpose of ritual immersion in Judaism). Approximately 100 years later a quarter of town`s inhabitants was Jewish (there were 431 of them) therefore the synagogue was rebuilt and enlarged. Unfortunately in year 1893 it was destroyed by a fire so on it`s place was built a new one in classicist style. A census from year 1900 mentions 394 Jewish inhabitants.
New synagogue had two staircases. Main entrance and two entrances for women led from the square. It was 12 m wide and 16 m long. Doors and windows were curved on the top. Prayer room for men had 12 windows.
